Era Vulgaris
By Queens Of The Stone Age
The Story
Released on June 12, 2007, Era Vulgaris marked a stylistic shift for Queens of the Stone Age toward a more abrasive and experimental sound. Following the melodic direction of Lullabies to Paralyze, Josh Homme aimed to create a record built around harsher textures, distorted tones, and unconventional structures. The album was recorded across multiple sessions with a rotating lineup of collaborators, including contributions from band members Troy Van Leeuwen, Joey Castillo, and others. The resulting material emphasizes mechanical grooves, jagged rhythms, and a deliberately raw sonic palette.
Turnin' on the Screw opens the album with a tense, looping groove that establishes the record’s darker tone. Sick, Sick, Sick follows with aggressive riffing and dense production. I'm Designer introduces a sarcastic lyrical perspective, while Into the Hollow slows the pace with a more restrained arrangement. These early tracks highlight the album’s alternating structure between heavy and atmospheric material.
Misfit Love expands gradually from minimal instrumentation into a layered groove, reflecting the band’s interest in dynamic build. Battery Acid returns to a more abrasive sound with short, punchy structure. Make It Wit Chu provides a contrasting moment, built around a smoother groove and melodic vocal delivery. The track originated from earlier sessions but was reworked for the album, offering a calmer midpoint.
3's & 7's introduces a more direct rock structure, while Suture Up Your Future returns to slower pacing and reflective tone. River in the Road continues the atmospheric approach, emphasizing space and texture. The album closes with Run, Pig, Run, which builds tension through layered instrumentation and shifting dynamics.
Era Vulgaris emphasizes texture, repetition, and unconventional arrangements. The album moves between abrasive riffs and restrained passages, creating contrast across the tracklist. With its raw production and experimental approach, the record reflects Queens of the Stone Age exploring a harsher sonic direction while maintaining the groove-based songwriting central to their sound.
