No Love Deep Web
By Death Grips
The Story
Released on October 1, 2012, No Love Deep Web followed quickly after The Money Store and arrived under unusual circumstances. Death Grips had planned to release the album through Epic Records, but conflicts over scheduling and creative control led the group to leak the record themselves online. The band posted the album for free download, accompanied by its controversial cover image, and announced the release without label approval. The unexpected rollout and dispute resulted in the group being dropped by Epic, reinforcing their reputation for independence and unpredictability.
Musically, No Love Deep Web stripped back some of the dense layering of The Money Store in favor of a more minimal and abrasive approach. Come Up and Get Me opens with sparse percussion and repeated phrases, setting a tense tone. Lil Boy and No Love continue the aggressive delivery, combining distorted synths with direct rhythmic structures. Black Dice and World of Dogs expand the sound with fragmented beats and abrupt transitions, emphasizing the album’s raw production.
Lock Your Doors introduces rapid rhythmic shifts, while Whammy builds around looping vocal samples and electronic textures. Hunger Games and Deep Web continue the mechanical, repetitive approach, focusing on intensity rather than melody. Stockton and Pop maintain the stripped-down aesthetic with heavy percussion and minimal harmonic structure.
Bass Rattle Stars Out the Sky slows the pacing slightly, using sustained tones and layered rhythm. The closing track, Artificial Death in the West, contrasts the rest of the album with a more restrained and atmospheric arrangement, providing a stark ending.
No Love Deep Web emphasizes minimalism, repetition, and confrontational tone. The album’s release strategy and raw production reinforced Death Grips’ reputation for unconventional methods. By reducing layered sampling and focusing on stark electronic rhythms, the record presents a harsher and more direct evolution of the group’s sound.
