The Money Store
By Death Grips
The Story
Released on April 24, 2012, The Money Store was Death Grips' first studio album and expanded the abrasive sound introduced on Exmilitary into a more structured but still confrontational project. The trio of MC Ride, Zach Hill, and Andy Morin developed the album with a focus on dense electronic production, sharp rhythmic shifts, and aggressive vocal delivery. Compared to their earlier work, the record emphasized tighter arrangements while maintaining chaotic textures and layered sampling. The result blended hip hop with industrial, electronic, and noise influences into a cohesive but intense listening experience.
Get Got opens the album with looping synths and driving percussion, immediately establishing the mechanical tone. The Fever (Aye Aye) continues with distorted textures and repetitive vocal phrasing, while Lost Boys introduces abrupt transitions and layered electronic elements. Blackjack and Hustle Bones intensify the pacing, combining shouted vocals with jagged rhythmic structures.
I've Seen Footage became one of the album's most recognizable tracks, built around a repetitive groove and fragmented lyrical imagery. Double Helix and System Blower expand the sonic density, emphasizing heavy bass and shifting rhythms. The Cage and Punk Weight continue the aggressive delivery, maintaining the album's relentless momentum.
Fuck That and Bitch Please return to minimal but forceful arrangements, highlighting repetition and texture. The closing track, Hacker, introduces a more melodic but still distorted structure, providing a slightly different tone while retaining the album's intensity.
The Money Store balances structured composition with chaotic production. The album moves quickly between tracks, emphasizing momentum and repetition rather than traditional narrative. By combining electronic noise, hip hop rhythm, and aggressive performance, Death Grips created a focused record that defined their early studio sound and expanded their experimental approach.
