The Story

Released on October 10, 2007, In Rainbows marked a new phase for Radiohead both musically and in how the album was distributed. After fulfilling their contract with EMI, the band chose to release the album independently through their website using a pay-what-you-want model. This approach drew significant attention and became a notable moment in the evolving relationship between artists and digital distribution. At the same time, the band returned to a more organic and performance-focused sound following the electronic experimentation of Kid A and Amnesiac. The recording sessions, again produced by Nigel Godrich, emphasized live playing and minimal processing, with many tracks built around rhythm and subtle arrangement changes. 15 Step opens the album with a shifting rhythmic pattern and layered percussion, followed by Bodysnatchers, which features a more direct guitar-driven approach. Nude, developed over several years before its release, introduces a slower tempo and restrained arrangement. Weird Fishes/Arpeggi builds gradually with interlocking guitar patterns, while All I Need centers on a steady progression that expands in intensity. Faust Arp provides a brief acoustic interlude before Reckoner, which combines rhythm, layered vocals, and atmospheric textures. House of Cards continues the subdued pacing with minimal instrumentation. Jigsaw Falling into Place returns to a more energetic structure, leading into Videotape, which closes the album with a restrained arrangement focused on piano and subtle rhythmic shifts. In Rainbows emphasizes warmth, rhythm, and subtle detail. The album blends guitar-based arrangements with electronic elements while maintaining a cohesive and understated sound. With its focus on performance and its unconventional release model, the record represents both a musical and structural shift in Radiohead’s approach.
