Ufabulum
By Squarepusher
The Story
Released on May 14, 2012, Ufabulum marked a distinct shift in Squarepusher’s approach, moving away from the prominent live bass playing that defined much of his earlier work and focusing instead on digital synthesis and programmed sound design. Created by Tom Jenkinson, the album emphasizes precision, texture, and complex electronic sequencing, reflecting a deliberate return to purely synthesized composition.
The production centers on sharp, digitally generated tones, rapid rhythmic patterns, and intricate layering. Rather than blending acoustic and electronic elements, Ufabulum presents a more controlled and abstract sound, built entirely from synthesized sources. This approach results in a consistent sonic palette characterized by clean edges, mechanical rhythms, and highly detailed structures.
4001 opens the album with a short introduction that leads into Unreal Square, where fast, shifting rhythms establish the album’s intensity. Stadium Ice and Energy Wizard continue the rapid sequencing and layered textures, emphasizing precision and complexity. Drax 2 and Dark Steering maintain the dense, digital sound, while 303 Scopem Hard introduces variations in tone and pacing.
The Metallurgist and Red in Blue expand the album’s structure with evolving patterns and dynamic shifts. Ecstatic Shock continues the high-energy sequencing, followed by Astro Scope, which introduces a slightly more restrained arrangement. Singularities builds toward a layered conclusion, and 4001 (Reprise) closes the album by returning to the opening motif.
Ufabulum emphasizes digital synthesis, rhythmic precision, and structured complexity. The album moves away from organic instrumentation toward a fully electronic sound, focusing on texture and pattern. By refining his approach to purely synthesized composition, Squarepusher created a record that highlights control, detail, and consistency within electronic music.
